Avatar Program
Forged in captivity by the RDA, five Na'vi children were raised as soldiers before turning against their masters.
The Avatar Program within the context of the game Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora serves as a foundational backstory element rather than a playable mechanic. It centers on The Ambassador Program (TAP), an RDA initiative launched in 2146 to train Na'vi children as human-Na'vi liaisons. Led by Dr. Alma Cortez and RDA Director John Mercer, the program abducted five young Na'vi—Tamtey, Ri'nela, Aha'ri, Teylan, and Nor—from their clans. While intended to foster diplomacy, the curriculum was strict and often cruel, culminating in Mercer killing one of the children, Aha'ri, to enforce compliance. This dark history sets the stage for the game's conflict when the remaining students are awakened sixteen years later.

Lore & Background
In 2146, eight years prior to Jake Sully's arrival, the RDA established The Ambassador Program (TAP) with Dr. Alma Cortez and Director John Mercer at its helm. Their goal was to train five abducted Na'vi children—Tamtey, Ri'nela, Aha'ri, Teylan, and Nor—to serve as ambassadors between humans and the indigenous clans. The training was harsh; when the students attempted to escape due to Mercer's strict curriculum, Mercer shot and killed Aha'ri to terrorize them into submission. In 2154, following the RDA's defeat by Jake Sully's army, Mercer ordered the execution of the now-adult students as liabilities. Dr. Cortez defied him, hiding the children in a cryogenic suspension chamber. Sixteen years later, in 2162, they were awakened by resistance fighters. Mercer returned to eliminate them, but Tamtey escaped to reunite with friends and join the Resistance. The program's legacy is one of betrayal; a traitor within the Kame'tire clan tipped off Mercer about the Sarentu clan, leading to their massacre and the abduction of surviving children raised as loyal RDA soldiers.
In Their Own Story
The narrative begins in 2162 when Tamtey awakens from sixteen years of suspended animation. Escaping an RDA raid led by John Mercer, Tamtey reunites with fellow former TAP students Ri'nela and Teylan before linking up with Dr. Alma Cortez and her team of ex-RDA personnel. After destroying an RDA energy mining operation, Tamtey communes with Eywa to learn about the nearly extinct Sarentu clan. The Resistance faces internal strife when Nor resents Alma for failing to protect them from Mercer, causing a rift between him and Teylan. When the RDA ambushes their base and captures Tamtey, Billy Nash sacrifices his life to rescue them. Later, after discovering that TAP Con-1 was used to raise Sarentu children as soldiers, Nor fatally stabs Alma in her Avatar form. Before dying, Alma transfers her memories to Tamtey and Ri'nela, confessing she helped Mercer carry out the massacre to ensure TAP's success. In the climax, Teylan switches sides from Mercer to the Resistance. Together, they sabotage a bomb intended to detonate beneath Pandora's surface, trapping Mercer in the explosion.
Reader's Guide
Players assume control of Tamtey, a Na'vi orphan raised as an RDA soldier within The Ambassador Program. The journey starts in 2162 after escaping cryogenic suspension. Your primary objective is to organize local Na'vi clans—the Aranahe, Zeswa, and Kame'tire—to fight the RDA's exploitation of the Western Frontier. Key moments include destroying an energy mining operation, forging alliances despite clan reluctance, and investigating TAP Con-1 to uncover the fate of the Sarentu clan. The game features two-player cooperative multiplayer. Combat involves using both RDA firearms (assault rifles, shotguns) and Na'vi weapons (bows, spear throwers). You can craft ammo and consumables from wild materials, though hunting with firearms prevents resource collection. Progression unlocks better gear via 'clan favor,' earned by defeating RDA troops and helping the Na'vi. The character is highly agile, capable of double jumps, and can ride an ikran for rapid traversal. A third-person mode was added in December 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Avatar Program?
The Avatar Program is a controversial scientific initiative run by the Resources Development Administration (RDA) that creates genetically engineered human-Na'vi hybrids. These bodies allow humans to inhabit Pandora without life-support suits, facilitating direct interaction with the indigenous population.
How do humans use these avatars?
Humans connect their consciousness to an avatar through a neural link that induces a lucid trance state, allowing them to control the hybrid body remotely. This interface enables them to breathe Pandoran air and navigate the environment naturally.
What is the true purpose of the program beyond research?
Although officially framed as a diplomatic tool for understanding Na'vi culture, the program ultimately serves corporate expansion and military strategy. It acts as a bridge for humanity to exploit Pandora's resources while maintaining a strategic foothold on the planet.
Where does the Avatar Program operate?
The entire operation is based at the Hell's Gate Outpost, which serves as the primary human settlement and scientific hub on Pandora. This facility houses the laboratories and containment units necessary to sustain the hybrid avatars.
