The Avatar Program was established out of necessity: humans could not survive Pandora’s atmosphere without protective suits, while the Na’vi refused direct contact with outsiders. By growing hybrid bodies in nutrient vats—blending human and Na’vi DNA—the RDA created vessels that could breathe the air and link neurally via queues. Dr. Grace Augustine championed the project as a tool for genuine cultural exchange, hoping to learn from the Na’vi before resource extraction began. However, corporate leadership increasingly viewed avatars as espionage tools, using them to infiltrate clans and map strategic locations beneath sacred grounds. This tension between scientific curiosity and corporate exploitation defined life at Hell’s Gate. The program ultimately became a catalyst for war when one avatar chose to defend his adopted Na’vi family over following RDA orders.

In Their Own Story

In the year 2146, eight years before Jake Sully arrived, the RDA launched The Ambassador Program (TAP), led by Dr. Alma Cortez and Director John Mercer. Five young Na'vi children—Tamtey, Ri'nela, Aha'ri, Teylan, and Nor—were abducted from their clans to be trained as human-Na'vi ambassadors. After years of strict training and a failed escape attempt that ended with Mercer killing Aha'ri, the students were placed in cryogenic suspension following the RDA’s defeat in 2154. Sixteen years later, in 2162, resistance fighters led by Alma awakened them. Tamtey escaped when Mercer returned to eliminate the group and reunited with allies to destroy an RDA mining operation. Through this mission, Tamtey connected with Eywa and learned of the nearly extinct Sarentu clan. As the RDA intensified its aggression, Tamtey forged alliances among the Aranahe, Zeswa, and Kame'tire clans. After Nor fatally stabbed Alma in her avatar form, she conveyed her memories to Tamtey and Ri'nela, revealing she had helped Mercer carry out a Sarentu massacre—a choice she deeply regretted. In the final confrontation, Tamtey and Teylan sabotaged an RDA bomb, trapping Mercer in an explosion as the Na’vi united to reclaim their land.
